Revisit – Hammonasset Reservoir, Madison, CT – The Light Is Always Changing or Haven’t I Learned Anything From Monet?

With limited time I  find myself returning to the same places to photograph the same subject matter. I often feel frustrated by this  as I am on the prowl for something new. This was the case this week when I had an unusual free afternoon. Having been there before I knew the light was pretty nice at the Hammonasset Reservoir waterfall. On my way there I began wondering why I was heading to that spot having been there just one month prior. I was thinking how in the world am I going to make a different photograph if I continue to return to the same place again and again.  After parking and preparing, not my gear, but myself – and traversing the slippery stairs, I was reminded, not so subtly that no place is ever the same.

I shot this photo on one of my first trips:

Hammonasset Reservoir, Madison, CT, waterfall, winter, snow, bridge, rocks, frozen

Waterfall under RT 80 bridge at the Hammonasset Reservoir dam, Madison, CT

This photo was taken this week – same spot –

waterfall, long exposure, rte 80, Madison, CT

So, lesson learned! different day, different mood, different light, different weather – different photo! Haven’t I learned anything from Monet?!!
